Seems I was a bit of a pillock and after recieving several of the army lists for Devilcon....

Ive bloody missed out the line in the player pack that says:

"No special Characters".

/facepalm.

Sorry for the....specialness. If you were under the impression that there were no special characters allowed (even tho the rules pack doesnt mention it - I may have told you in person), let me know and you can resubmit your list.

Hey all

Just got home and cracked a beer - might have to have a chat to his friends shortly. :)

I wanted to thank those who attended, your support will help to get the next one organised and up and running. I hope you had a good weekend and 5 challenging games! You certainly made my life easy, not that many rules queries and no "heated" discussions. Just get your games finished on time eh? :P Even though its fun playing games, its just as fun getting involved with all of the games, watching the high's and low's... only thing is that its bloody hard work not to comment at all!!! Quite often I had to walk away before I said something...

Thoughts of my own about the actual running of the tournie: Urm... I *think* it all went fairly smoothly. Having excel set up before hand made it pretty easy to do the draws, was just a bit of a bugger working out what tables people were playing on so that you didnt get the same one twice. If there were more players and hence tables it would have been easier. Definitely helped having the spare table. Draws were a bugger towards the end as people grouped together had played those around them on the ladder...I think I got it all pretty much right though. Again, the small number of players didnt help there.

Chalk on the tables helped, but I will remember for next time to put the trees on bases so you woodie types can shift them around easier. Especially you Conor - with your tree surfing Ancient. Did you all find the terrain ok?

Comp I think was pretty successful. Clearer guidelines next time will ensure no complaints, and I will try not to forget the "No Special Characters" line.... Woops. By the time I had received the lists, it was too late to change it.

To give you an idea of how it worked.... Rounds 3-4-5, there were only 4 games out of 15 that had a margin greater than 14-6. 15.25-4.74, 16-4, 18-2 and 15.75-4.25. Pretty close games all in all. It also meant that the people who had soft comp, didnt get such a jump at the end.... I think that this system would work better with a larger player base, but hard to say without actually experiencing it.

Anyways, enough blabble... Results are:

Player Name: Over All, Battle Points, Appearance, Sports. Beauty Pageant (not added to total - player marked).

Squiddy: 111.5, 62.5, 24, 25. 10.
Boris: 103.25, 61.25, 22, 20. 5.
Reese: 103, 60, 22, 21. 4.
Paul: 102.5, 57, 22.5, 23.
Dave: 99, 56, 23, 20.
Conor: 96.25, 48.25, 25, 23. 11.
Cat: 90.5, 45.5, 23, 22. 9.
Animal: 74.25, 26.25 23, 25. 19.
Andy U: 74.25, 54.25, 2, 18.
PJ: 55, 29, 6, 20.

Prizes were awarded to those players who got top of each of the prize categories, in the order of Overall, Battle Points, Best Sport, Players Choice. However if a player received more than 1 prize, they would take the greater prize and be out of contention for the others. This was put in place to share the love around a little.

Overall: Squiddy! Congrats mate.
Battle Points: Boris (Squiddy claimed overall) The top 4 were separated by 5 points...
Best Sports: Damien (Squiddy claimed overall - therefore won on count back, but already had a prize so congrats Damo).
Players Choice: Conor (Damien claimed best sports - but also romped it in for painting - Conor had 2nd highest points and also claimed full appearance score).

Bad Luck award: Awarded to PJ. Mate, with the rolls you had over the entire weekend...never touch any one else's dice, ever. To have 7 miscasts in one game, and your fire dragon to miscast, then die 4 times over the weekend and to then have your dragon Whimper on a few occasions due to the death of said mage... Terrible. Could explain your lack of battle points. However you should also keep your squishy, ancient, wise beyond belief, no armour mage in a unit.... hot tip. :P Bags not playing you next because you are WELL overdue to dish out a serious :: :: kicking.

Right, the beer is well and truly finished. I must go get another. Hope you had fun. Any comments etc etc - post here or PM me if you feel it needs it.

Cheers all

Just wanted to pop in to say a massive thanks to Andy for running the weekend, great fun all round and will definitely be back next year to defend my shiny title! I really liked how the comp worked, would work great on a larger scale and in the end only got me around 15pts - straight 3's if you had player judging comp, let alone checklist - and made sure that people couldnt 'leapfrog' at the end without playing the other armies at the top. States last year for example, I finished 10 places higher than Mariusz without going anywhere near the top tables. Adding the comp game by game means that if you take the 'softer' list then you'd better play it well otherwise you're going to get thumped by the 'harder' list comp or not. Even if you do have a comp bonus of five, a 20-0 still only becomes a 17.5-2.5! Definitely worth a look for states, even for all those 'OMG SIF COMP' players out there. That said, not sure if the extra points/slots were needed, I didnt use the special choice I was given but it didnt feel quite right getting 250pts over everyone, even if that is 250pts worth of extra stuff for my opponent to kill. As someone said, that could be a giant, or a big block of savage orc boar boy bigunz (4 S5 attacks each on the charge); not needed IMO. Not that I minded upgrading my units at all!

Big thanks to all who I played against, had some really fun and interesting games, and they always looked like they could go either way at any moment. To Boris - I think a rematch is in order, even if our game did only get till the end of turn2 due to us having too much fun it would be great to play it out to the end one day in the store, it was poised for a really good fight! Big thanks also goes to Animal and his parents for the lifts too and from, made life a hell of a lot easier than busses, and finally yet again a huge thanks to Andy for not only running the event but having to sit on the sidelines and watch for two days without rolling a single dice (except that one you rolled for me, and rolled a 1 :P). See you all and hopefully many more next time round!

Yep, thanks for the great weekend tourney Andy, I agree that the comp system was a good one providing a gradual improvement to the army's score. Looking forward to next year.

Thanks andy!!!
I think we shud have a chat regarding comping, I just don't feel the tiers were correct and it was so hard playing a high tier army and having to deal with a base of 2 comp let alone if i made a hard army and got 0. And Undy having a higher comp score than me just wasn't right :P if not ban special characters, at least ban undy :P Given the amount of battle points squiddy recieved (nothing gainst him, definately deserved best overall) and the amount myself and probably Borris lost the battle points would have been very different. It seems pretty nuts for one person to win 1st generall and 1st overall.

But putting that aside id like to say thanks again andy 4 putting yourself out there and doin such a good job

A solution I can see (tiers aside) would be to base best general on the unmodified score (so before comp), and stick the comp in another column at the end. Would mean having to have a seperate tally on the side for best general (as comp is applied per game to determine who plays who) but that shouldnt be too hard. Im glad the best general went to Borris but that said I did only drop one game (against him, and the clock), the rest were minor victories and a draw, with a solid against Animal, so its not as if I didnt win the games I played.

Well done Andy on running the tournie as I made a quick appearance here and there, sorry I could not be of more help but it looks like it went smoothly.

Elrad it is not that much of a surprise that overall and best general gets won by the same person in smaller tournies. I did the same and also equal 1st in sports at a tournie the other year in Devonport but instead of me getting 3 prizes I got the overall and general and sports went to other people.

Thank you to Area 52 for their continued support with prizes and the use of their terrain.

A nicely run tournament. Well done Andy, even if you did forget about "special character"

I'm a big fan of how the prizes were handed out, this should certainly be applied to smaller tournaments. It stops one person from completely cleaning up, even if they do it unintentionally like Squiddy

I think that sounds like a pretty good idea squiddy, Mariusz mentioned something along those lines to me we he showed up on sunday. It would allow players going for general to take what they like in their army, knowing they are playing a hard list they will prob not get 1st overall but 1st general.

Call me daft, but just blend in compo with sportsmanship.

Daft idea.

Sprtsmanship should be a completely seperate cateory that is uneffected by army composition.

Not really when you think about it. The point of army comp is to keep things "nice", instead of half the people rocking up with "nice" and "sporting" lists and the other half rocking up with dead hard lists designed to grind everyone else into the dirt without remorse.

The point of Sportsmanship is to keep people being nice and keep it enjoyable, without being d-bags who care (and act!) solely as if the win's the thing.

Really, there's no good place to add in the comp scores, excepting maybe into the overall calcs, but even then it can get screwy.

I completely disagree 110%. Having it added to battlescores along the way means that you have to earn your comp and eliminates leapfrogging. If this were in the states a softer army like mine would have to go head to head with Mariusz about half way through if I were scoring well (aka minor victories with good comp bonus) and I would get rightfully put in my place! Rather than last year as I said finishing 10 spots higher than him, which wasnt right IMO. But lumping it with sports is definately not the way to go and even something thats been stressed before - they are not the same thing. I could be playing the nicest army in the world but still be a complete sore loser, and on the flipside you have players like Carpo who are great guys all round but take a harder list. As you say its everyones choice, but without sports I think you'd see a decline in the general fun of the event as people are loud-mouthed, :: :: and ungracious in victory or defeat, and noone wants to see that!
