TOURNAMENT INFO
this is the way we're going to score the tournaments, (unless some big unforseen problem occurs). We've put it here so you know and can work out how you're going in rankings and thus how many duels you have to win, what kind of deck you might want to build etc. this is also the cost, how opponents will be chosen and such. read on...
OPPONENT SELECTION
when people arrive at 12.30, they can register their deck and pay the entry fee. they will also be randomly given a number (most likely the first person to walk in will be number one, the second number two and so on...okay so it's not really random!) it doesn't matter who gets what number, they're just a way of identifying people.
once everyone has arrived, all the numbers will be put into a box and then two numbers will be drawn out. these two people will duel each other first off. so, if you're number 5, and "5" and "13" get drawn out, you duel whoever has the number 13. see? we will draw two numbers at a time out of the box until everyone is paired up with someone (if there are an odd number of people, one of the organisers will most likely sit out).
once the first round of matches is complete, all the numbers will go back into the box and people will be paired up in the same way. HOWEVER, if we draw out a pair that has ALREADY PLAYED, we will put their numbers back into the box and redraw. we will TRY to do this between days as well (i.e. if "5" and "13" are drawn in the first month, and then again in the second month), but because we're not sure how many people will turn up to all the days it may be difficult.
MATCHES AND TIME
each person will play four matches during the day. all four match-pairings will be chosen by random draw.
the matches will start at 1.00pm and will go to 4.00pm. There will be a 45 minute time limit on each match, and any duels not finished within that limit will be declared draws (this MAY need to be revised if it's too short a time limit, but we won't know until after the first day).
SCORING
points will be awarded PER DUEL, not per match
because advanced format is "technically" harder to win with (i.e. because there are less cards available to you when building a deck, because of the broken cards and combos you can use in traditional format and because of the "just plain nasty" cards you can use in traditional), we will award more points if you win with an advanced format deck against a traditional format deck
thus the scoring PER DUEL looks like this:
LOSS - 0 POINTS
DRAW - 0 POINTS
WIN (traditional vs. traditional) - 200 POINTS
WIN (traditional vs. advanced) - 200 POINTS
WIN (advanced vs. advanced) - 200 POINTS< seeing as BOTH players are using advanced, no bonus is given as neither player had an advantage
WIN (advanced vs. traditional) - 240 POINTS < so you effectively have to win 5 duels with advanced vs. traditional (5 x 240 points = 1200 points), to get the same amount of points as SIX wins with any other combination (6 x 200 points = 1200 points)
to give you some idea of how this would play out in one day's worth of duelling, here is an example of the possible scores of a duellist using an ADVANCED FORMAT deck
MATCH ONE (vs. advanced deck)
duel #1: LOSS - 0 points
duel #2: WIN - 200 points
duel #3: WIN - 200 points
MATCH ONE TOTAL: 400 POINTS
MATCH TWO (vs. traditional deck)
duel #1: WIN - 240 points
duel #2: LOSS - 0 points
duel #3: WIN - 240 points
MATCH TWO TOTAL: 480 POINTS
MATCH THREE (vs. traditional deck)
duel #1: WIN - 240 points
duel #2: WIN - 240 points
^obviously there is no need for a third duel here, as both of the first duels have been won by the same person^
MATCH THREE TOTAL: 480 POINTS
MATCH FOUR (vs. advanced deck)
duel #1: LOSS - 0 points
duel #2: DRAW - 0 points
duel #3: WIN - 200 points
MATCH FOUR TOTAL: 200 POINTS
TOTAL FOR THAT DAY:
MATCH ONE TOTAL: 400 points
plus
MATCH TWO TOTAL: 480 points
plus
MATCH THREE TOTAL: 480 points
plus
MATCH FOUR TOTAL: 200 points
= 1560 POINTS
from there, the scores will be ranked and whoever has the highest score on that day is the winner. if more than one duellist has the highest score, either all duellists with the highest score will be given a prize OR if there is time, we might have some kind of a play-off. because the tournament is going to run for six months, at the end of that six months we will also have a MAJOR PRIZE for the best duellist over that time.YOU CAN ONLY WIN THE MAJOR PRIZE IF YOU COME TO FOUR OR MORE OF THE TOURNAMENT DAYS and they will be pretty sweet prizes at the end of the six tournament days, we will add up the DAILY scores of those who have come to four or more of the tournament days. WE WILL ADD UP YOUR FOUR BEST SCORES to determine your overall total! thus, if you've only come to four days, we can only add up the four scores we have, but if you've you've come to six days we can knock off your bottom two daily scores.
here's an example...
DAY ONE TOTAL: 1560 points
DAY TWO TOTAL: 1200 points
DAY THREE TOTAL: 1600 points
DAY FOUR TOTAL: 800 points
DAY FIVE TOTAL: 1560 points
DAY SIX TOTAL: 1000 points
^so, first we knock off the two bottom scores (day four and day six). then we add the remaining totals together to get 1560 + 1200 + 1600 + 1560 = 5920
that 5920 then becomes that duellists overall score. the duellist with the highest overall score will win the major prize. it should be mentioned that there will most likely be a second place prize in both the major and weekly prize, and POSSIBLY a lucky draw prize in the weekly prizes. that hasn't been fully decided yet though . because the major prize can only be won by those who have come to four or more tournament days, it wouldn't make sense to keep a running score rank total in store until at least four of the six days have been played. HOWEVER, we will keep a sheet in-store with everyone's scores SO FAR on it - but unranked. the sheet will most likely be numbered by duellist - i.e. if you've been assigned number "1", you'll be at the top of the sheet, no matter what your rank or scores thus far. because of this, it's important that you KEEP YOUR NUMBER between duels!!! if a new duellist turns up half-way through the tournament, we'll assign them a new number
DECK REGISTRATION
you will need to register your deck at the tournament. you may only have ONE DECK per tournament day. however, you can change between days...i.e. in november use one deck and then on the second tournament day use another deck. BECAUSE YOU CAN ONLY USE ONE DECK, WE RECOMMEND YOU MAKE THE BEST USE OF YOUR SIDE-DECK THAT YOU CAN
deck registration forms were given out at the last practice day. hopefully soon we'll have a link to them on this page so you can download them, as well as having some in area52. if you haven't got one though, we'll have some spares on the tournament day - just make sure you turn up at 12.30 so you have time to register your deck!
when you register your deck, you'll need to declare every card in your deck, side-deck and fusion deck - as well as what format deck you are playing with. your decks will also be checked by tournament organisers (you are free to see our decks as well [before play and selection starts] of course).
COST AND PRIZES
entry fee for the tournament is $8 per person. this money will ALL be put back into prizes - the weekly and major prizes.
to begin with, most (if not all) of the tournament organisers WILL pay the entry fee, but WONT win prizes (even if they come first, second or whatever - we'll give the prizes to the next people down the list). this is mainly because we've been playing / collecting cards for longer than MOST of the other duellists so we want to give you guys a chance to get some good cards etc. however if we start consistantly losing and it's clear that we don't need to handicap ourselves, then we'll go in for the prizes.
