2006 Golden Demon Information

Tasmanian Selected Entrants Gallery

The annual Golden Demon Painting Competion is over again for another year, and the winners announced. Congratulations go to our Tasmanian entrants Jamie Downward who took the Golden Demon Trophy for Warhammer Fantasy Large Miniature Category for his "Green Knight", and to Luke Townshend for his Catachan Imperial Guardsman in the Youngbloods Warhammer 40,000 Single Miniature Category got a Bronze Demon for his outstanding effort. Well done guys, good luck for next year, and keep an eye out for more of our prolific painters in next years competition.

I must say that being able to attend the Golden Demon Day in the Sydney Parramatta Games Workshop store (even if only for an hour) was very gratifying. I let my eyes pore eagerly over every beautiful miniature in the four large glass cases put out to display them, taking in all the inspiration, ideas and techniques portrayed therein. The unfortunate thing for those not able to actually attend that day is that they do not end up seeing all of the fantastic models on display. Understand, that for a miniature to be able to make it that far through the competition (two rounds of "knock outs" and then the final of over a dozen miniatures in each category) it must be 'one of the best' of its kind. This is a high class painting competition, and lets not be fooled into thinking that the Australian competition allows for any laxity in style, it is as high class as any in the world. The fact that most people do not get to see all of the great entries that make it that far (into the final), and only end up seeing, usually, the trophy winners, is something that Bryan Cook (editor of Australian White Dwarf Magazine) plans to remedy in the issue with our competition as a feature. This time around, he told me on the day, there will be a 24 page 'booklet' of the winners, including 6 pages of 'almost rans' to allow people to see some of the great work people have done, that didn't make it to recieve a trophy due to the very high quality of the models in general. Wether this 'booklet' will be a pull out affair, to compensate for the kind of idea put forward by the likes of Laurie Goodridge in collecting these features as a reference material for ideas, or wether it will just end up being a section of the magazine as usual, we are yet to see, but none the less it is good news. The more focus we put on this kind of quality, community activity the better, and the more reference available to interested painters the greater their works are likely to become.

Photos of the cabinets were not able to be taken on the day, which is unfortunate, but due to the focus of it given in the White Dwarf it is fair enough. The more observant of you may notice the frantic hand waving gesture of the White Dwarf photographer to me during my taking of blurry pictures of the judging. I don't think he was very happy with me...

One thing I did want to capture mainly was the community of painters that had organised with the help of the Parramatta store staff for the availability of a large table and free chairs for any persons wanting to turn up over the weekend and get together and paint. This was a fantastic opportunity for painters and modellers of all styles and levels of advancement, as the people who organised it are among the best (and most awarded - Golden Demon wise) painters in all of Australia, all willing to give their time for any interested parties who turned up. I sincerely hope that this will continue to be an nofficially sanctioned event over the course of Golden Demon Days to come in the future, as the benefit this can give to any level of modeller is priceless, and just waiting for opportunists to turn up and take advantage. A virtual round of applause for those who came up with the idea, and to Games Workshop and the Parramatta management who helped it happen.

The Tasmanian local round for the 2006 Golden Demon Painting Competition was a great success, we saw an increase in numbers of entries, and a general lift in local painting quality. Laurie Goodridge came down again to give us some advice on painting and give some feedback to participants - he even found time for a touch of judging! We were also treated to the presence of the ABC crew for the series "Collectors", showcasing Jamie Downwards journey through the Golden Demon process and his model collection. A huge thanks goes to the participants, and we expect to see bigger and better things next year!
